Go in search of hidden treasures

  • Innovative 'game'
  • Online element

  • Quite confusing to start with

I used to love taking part in treasure hunts as a kid, although I was never very good at them and would invariably get lost, leaving the teachers no option but to scramble a helicopter to come and find me. These kind of trails are a lot more sophisicated than just looking under rocks for clues, and SmartGPX proves a good testiment to that.

This is a game based around in the practice of geochanig, in which you travel the world in search of treasures. "What on Earth is geocaching?" I hear you cry. Well, it's basically a kind of sport in which participants hidden treasures and publish their coordinates in a common forum.

The objective for the rest of the registered members is to reach these coordinates and find the treasure. Using SmartGPX you can tap into this intruiging pasttime, joining a community of geocachers, and enrolling in the search for one of the hidden treasures, before publishing the positions of your own treasures.

It's pretty difficult to get to grips with and you'll need a GPS receiver to accompany your phone, but if you've got the time to spare, SmartGPX makes for an interesting diversion.

SmartGPX is a Pocket Query viewer for Symbian OS based smartphones. It is designed to be as simple as possible. You can hold your GPS receiver in one hand and your Symbian OS device in the other hand to view your location and the cache description at the same time.

Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for GPS users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a GPS unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet.

GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache.
